BBC News: Dreading going back to work? How to ease the post-Christmas return
The post-Christmas return to work can stir up a familiar feeling: dread, overwhelm and that heavy Sunday night sinking feeling. I contributed to a recent BBC article on easing back into work after the festive break. This paints this as a common experience and I offer evidence-informed strategies to make the transition smoother.
The way we return to work matters as much as the work itself. That’s because a successful restart isn’t about brute force or sheer willpower. It’s about purposeful pacing, clarity and psychological readiness.
Here’s what the conversation emphasises:
• Start with intention, not inbox zero. Rather than diving into the deepest tasks first, identify meaningful priorities that set an early tone of accomplishment.
• Structure your day around energy and focus rather than urgency. Build in breaks and guard against overwhelm.
• Be vocal with your team or manager about what success looks like in these first days back. Clarity fuels confidence.
From my experience working with leaders and teams, returning to work after any break is also a psychological shift. Small wins matter, and small boundaries matter even more.
How you start your work year sets the rhythm for every week that follows. Give yourself structure that protects your energy and honours your priorities.
That means planning realistic days, not heroic ones. It’s a mindset shift and a practical framework combined, one that helps you move from “dreading it” to “handling it” with grace.
If this year is going to feel different, the way you return to work has to feel different too.
